Material research of the properties of natural latex
Natural latex is produced directly from the rubber tree, making it a distinctly environmentally friendly material. The project explores tools and methods for processing natural latex, with the goal of offering a holistic design concept that makes beneficial use of materials, taking into account the object’s lifecycle and material reclamation.
The material insights are exemplified in a line of shoes that showcases the processing methods developed for different applications in the structure of the sole, the upper, and the connection options. The approach to the research and development process was rooted in the desire to realize a sustainable vision in an industry that is overwhelmed with environmentally harmful materials and processes. This is reflected in the use of natural latex and other natural materials, in the avoidance of adhesives, and in a design that makes it possible to take the shoe apart and recycle it.
